Syria WMD II
I confess a long standing interest in Syrian weapons of mass destruction. This first blog I posted on this site (“Syria: We’re Uncle Stupid” 10/23/2013) criticized then President Obama’s vaporous “red line” on Bashar Assad’s possession of chemical weapons. Obama flinched at enforcing his red line, instead cutting a deal with Vladimir Putin for “verified” removal of Assad’s chemicals. I pointed out that Assad’s 1,000 ton stock of the bad stuff could be hidden in one garage in a country twice the size of Indiana, and good luck enforcing this fig leaf deal.
For this heresy I was criticized as being Indiana’s version of Dr. Strangelove.
Well, folks, Assad not only kept the gas, he used it.
Last night Donald Trump was merely enforcing President Obama’s red line rhetoric with his air strike on a Syrian air base.
But let’s throw President Trump no more than a modest bouquet (or brickbat, if you are of the Trump-hater persuasion).. What he did was the mildest of mild responses. Fifty-nine cruise missiles launched at one airfield. Aircraft and weapons storage bunkers were off limits, according to the Pentagon, and an hour’s warning was given so personnel could evacuate. What did we accomplish. If we didn’t hit planes, weapons or people, we likely flattened some aircraft service facilities and cratered some runways. Neither takes long to repair or replace, and Assad has at least five other airfield. This was a pinprick with a very small pin.
Still, if we object to Assad gassing Syrian babies, it beats running to the U. N. for yet another resolution of condemnation.
